The AI chip selloff moved from a Wall Street problem into an Asia-session test after CNBC reported SK Hynix plunged more than 10% in Seoul and Samsung Electronics fell over 8%. Bloomberg's high-priority markets feed also flagged a chip rout, with Japanese and Korean stocks tumbling as traders questioned AI funding loops and China competition risk.

The move is wider than a single-name wobble. CNBC reported that South Korea's KOSPI and the Nasdaq 100 recently had a 60-day correlation near 0.50, the highest since 2021, because Samsung and SK Hynix now make up more than half of the Korean index.

TL;DR

  • CNBC reported SK Hynix fell more than 10% and Samsung Electronics dropped over 8% in Seoul.
  • Japan's chip complex also weakened, with Tokyo Electron, Advantest, SoftBank and Kioxia under pressure.
  • The VanEck Semiconductor ETF, or SMH, lost more than 2% on Monday as AMD, Teradyne and Micron declined.
  • The trading question is whether this stays inside semiconductors or pulls Nasdaq futures lower.
  • Traders should watch SMH, Nvidia, KOSPI breadth, Treasury yields and Nasdaq futures.

AI chip selloff: what happened

The catalyst came after another weak U.S. semiconductor session spilled into Asia. CNBC reported that SK Hynix fell more than 10%, Samsung Electronics declined over 8%, Samsung SDI dropped over 7% and LG Innotek slid nearly 14%. In Japan, Tokyo Electron fell more than 9%, Advantest lost over 8%, SoftBank fell nearly 5% and Kioxia dropped more than 15%.

CNBC said SMH lost more than 2% on Monday, adding to Friday's losses. AMD fell 5%, Teradyne dropped 4% and Micron lost about 2%. Bloomberg's markets feed framed the broader backdrop as stocks slumping while the AI selloff accelerated and bonds gained.

CNBC also reported that the KOSPI and Nasdaq 100 correlation recently climbed to about 0.50. That matters because Samsung and SK Hynix sell high-bandwidth memory and other chips used in AI servers. When U.S. hyperscaler spending expectations change, Korean memory stocks can reprice fast.

When we tested this kind of overnight setup on chartdojo.io, the traders who handled it best treated the Asia move as a signal, then waited for U.S. confirmation. A Seoul selloff does not automatically mean a full Nasdaq breakdown. The better process is to map the first reaction, then watch whether U.S. futures, SMH and yields confirm the pressure.

Why markets moved

The move is about crowding and confidence. The AI trade has been built on a simple assumption: data-center spending keeps expanding and the memory supply chain keeps pricing that demand. CNBC cited analysts who said Samsung and SK Hynix have become direct proxies for the global AI hardware cycle.

That creates a tight feedback loop. If investors question hyperscaler capital spending, Nvidia and U.S. chip shares weaken. If U.S. chip shares weaken while American markets are closed, Korea and Japan provide the next liquid venue for the reaction. If Asia then extends the move, Nasdaq futures can start the next U.S. session already under pressure.

Bloomberg's feed added two reasons for the pressure: circular funding concerns and China competition fears. Circular funding means investors are asking whether AI demand is being propped up by deals inside the same ecosystem rather than clean end-user demand. China competition risk means traders are watching whether Chinese memory and semiconductor firms can pressure pricing or margins faster than expected.

Implications for stocks, futures and crypto traders

Stock traders should separate the chip complex from the broad market. A contained chip selloff would show up as weakness in SMH, Nvidia, AMD, Micron and the Asia memory names, while defensive sectors and equal-weight indices hold up. A broader risk-off move would show weaker Nasdaq breadth, falling megacap leadership and stronger demand for Treasuries.

Futures traders need to watch the handoff. KOSPI weakness is the first leg, and Nasdaq futures are the bridge into the U.S. cash session. If Nasdaq futures keep making lower lows while Treasury yields fall, that would look like a growth-risk scare rather than a rates-only move.

Crypto traders should not force the story into Bitcoin unless the tape confirms it. A deep Nasdaq drawdown can still hit BTC through liquidity and use, but Monday's earlier crypto read was more mixed. The relevant trigger is whether Bitcoin loses support while SMH and Nasdaq futures keep falling.

Potential positives vs negatives

Potential positives

  • SMH stabilizes after Monday's drop and Nvidia avoids fresh follow-through selling.
  • KOSPI losses stay concentrated in memory and electronics rather than spreading across banks, exporters and consumer shares.
  • Treasury yields remain orderly, which gives growth stocks room to absorb the chip reset.
  • U.S. earnings commentary supports real AI demand rather than only future spending promises.

Potential negatives

  • SK Hynix and Samsung selling continues into another Seoul session, turning this into a second-leg Asia risk event.
  • Nasdaq futures break lower before the U.S. open and SMH fails to hold its prior support area.
  • China competition headlines keep pressuring memory-chip margins and investor confidence.
  • Crypto funding weakens at the same time, showing that the selloff is spreading into broader speculative risk.

What could happen from here

Base case

The chip selloff stays sharp but contained. U.S. traders mark down SMH and the major chip names, but the Nasdaq avoids a full breadth break. Confirmation would be a calmer premarket tape, stable Treasury yields and smaller losses in Nvidia and AMD. This path fails if Nasdaq futures keep sliding after Europe opens.

Upside case

Dip buyers step in after the Asia shock, helped by earnings commentary that supports AI-server demand. Confirmation would be SMH reclaiming Monday's decline, SK Hynix reducing losses in the next Seoul session and Nasdaq futures turning positive before the U.S. cash open. This path fails if the rebound is narrow and volume is weak.

Downside case

The selloff broadens from memory chips into the full AI and megacap technology trade. Confirmation would be weaker Nasdaq breadth, continued pressure in KOSPI leaders, falling high-beta software and a bid in Treasuries. The downside path weakens if SMH holds and KOSPI breadth improves.

What to watch next

  • SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics in the next Seoul session.
  • Tokyo Electron, Advantest, SoftBank and Kioxia for Japan follow-through.
  • SMH, Nvidia, AMD and Micron in U.S. premarket trading.
  • Nasdaq futures versus equal-weight stock gauges.
  • Treasury yields, because a bond rally alongside weaker stocks points to growth fear.
  • Bitcoin support and funding only if the equity selloff starts spilling into crypto liquidity.
